She is unafraid to expose authority’s faults and let people in on a new way of thinking and seeing those in command. Alvarez was completely unafraid to tell people exactly how she felt about people who had social supremacy to her. Many people tend to buckle and give in to whatever people of authority or relative acceptance, whether it is in an academic setting or common day. Many people also were probably not as confident or brave as Alvarez, so they may have been nervous they would be critiqued for challenging authority. Typically we see the border patrol as gun toting aggressors ready to push anyone they can away, but in this case rather than guns pushing people away they had erasers destroying Alvarez’s words. ![]() ![]() Whenever she attempted this, the famous poets comment was probably in the back of her mind causing her to go back and change it to be in Spanish. It was as though if in her writing she tried to start writing in English that it would be the equivalent of her trying to cross the border. She saw this unspoken rule cause her pages to stay blank and in turn saw this as a guard like on the border. In her time of struggle when she felt as though she wasn’t allowed to write poetry unless is was in Spanish, Alvarez writes “For months i suffered from bad writer’s-block’/which I envisioned, not as a blank page,/but as a literary border guard-/turning me back to Spanish on each line'” (17-20). She found inspiration in a stereotypical banana commercial, and rather than looking to what was said about literary merit, she saw this woman in a commercial speaking English in her accent and realizes she can use her talent and not be ashamed or be convinced it isn’t a real poem because she originally spoke Spanish. ![]() Alvarez writes “I touched the screen and sang/ my own heart out with my new muse,” (28-29). Rather than staying defeated and stopping her writing all together, Alvarez found her own inspiration and went against what the poet claimed. In seeing this, Alvarez proceeded to be discouraged from writing (possibly for a fear that she may never be able to gain the same amount of success as the poet she looked to had). In “First Muse”, one of the authority figures she saw as an inspiration to her stated that “‘One can only write poems in the tongue/ in which one first said Mother,'” (Alvarez 1-3). Typically, as a society it is seen that those who have achieved literary merit have succeeded however it is that will show they are doing well in their element. ![]()
